Ofcom has just granted permission for Vodafone and O2 to pool their resources. This decision will allow O2 customers to use Vodafone telephone masts and Vodafone customers to use O2 telephone masts to make calls, and the two companies claim that they should be able to offer 2G and 3G coverage for more than 98% of the UK by 2015.
The resource sharing agreement could mean that the two companies collaborate to offer LTE to customers by next year.
The decision by Vodafone and O2 to work together was undoubtedly sparked by the merger of T-Mobile and Orange a few years back. Everything Everywhere, the partnership between Orange and T-Mobile, is now the largest network in the UK and has just begun rebranding many high street stores with the “EE” logo. EE will be the first network to offer LTE in the UK, and existing Orange and T-Mobile customers with compatible handsets will be able to transfer to an EE LTE contract when the service goes live.
The decision to share resources should mean that many Vodafone and O2 customers will now receive greater phone signal for more areas across the country.
